November News

Dear Parents and Caregivers         23 November 2015

Wow, what a term!! The things we have achieved which we couldn’t have done without you!

Photos of Children
Some of these were used to decorate our classroom calendar. If you would like a copy of your child’s photos, can you please see me about a convenient time, we can transfer the file on to a USB stick.

Reading
There has been wonderful progress in the children’s reading through your help and encouragement each evening. The formal reading programme which has been running all year will finish at the end of this week, as all the books need to be put away for the end of term.  We will still be doing work with words and reading each day but not bringing home a regular home reader. I encourage you to still review the essential sight words that your child brings home, visit the Hutt Library on a regular basis over the summer and read with your child.

Mana Island
We had such lovely weather and a great group of parents that offered to come and help.  The kids had a marvellous time and are continuing to learn about animals and their habitats at school. We have just finished making a papier mache model and written about our time there. You will be able to see our photos of the trip and the process on our blog page to be located on our school website.
Sun Smart
It’s nice to see the children remembering to wear their sunhats whenever they’re outside. Some hats the children have are caps, these don’t give the children enough coverage over their heads and faces. The school require that they wear a full brimmed hat. A brim that goes all the way round, if the children don’t wear a full brimmed hat they are asked to sit on the deck in the shade.

Swimming
Swimming will begin next week and continue the week after. Our time is 11.20 am – 12.00 pm. Your child will need to have named togs and towel in a named bag. It is also encouraged that they have goggles so their eyes don’t get sore from the chlorine. We will be travelling with Room 6 there and back by bus. It is great to have parent’s help in changing the children. If you can, please let me know.

Assembly Item
This Friday it is our turn to present an item to the school. We will be joining with Room 4, Miss Browne’s class, to show what we have been learning in Sign Language. If we think we have a bit more time available, we will share our models of Mana Island.

Mana Island Trip

Mana Island

We had perfect weather for our Mana Island trip after it was postponed  from yesterday due to bad weather

We walked and walked and walked.

Sometimes we walked up STEEP hills!!

Some got really tired and have a rest along the way.

Some were very chilled out right from the beginning

We found the shell museum that Room 4 had left us.
Thanks Room 4!

The ranger came and talked to us.
He  showed us a kiwi egg and a lizard.
We even used a long drop toilet. Many of us wondered why it didn't flush.

We played on the beach and discovered interesting things.

Lots of wonderful parents came to help.

Thanks everyone

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Spelling
Reviewing of the Essential Word Lists has been highly successful enabling the children to now begin to use these words in their writing. Next week some children will bring home spelling words chosen from their own writing. These words are those they got mostly right. We have also been focussing on the vowels and their sounds. The children are becoming confident in their knowledge.

Mana Island
Next week we will be starting a unit of study about Mana Island, the habitats and native life found there. It will be interesting looking and listening to native birds and endeavouring to identify their calls. Also about what a habitat is, what affects it and what effect it has on the wildlife.
There have been notices coming home about the Junior Schools trip to Mana Island.  Please note that the recent notice said that the bus will be leaving school at 8.00 am and not arriving back until 3.30pm. We will need 13 parents to come. These parents will need to pay $30.00. This may seem a lot but is well worth it. This trip is already subsidised by the school fundraising committee.

Snowbright and The Frozen Waste
Snowbright and the Frozen Waters is an Eco fairytale performed by Next Stage at the Little Theatre, Lower Hutt. We will be walking there. Each child will need a plastic bag. If you would like to help with this please let me know.

Sun Smart
At Hutt Central School we care about the well-being of the children. As summer approaches we are encouraging the children to wear sunhats daily. After Labour Weekend they are to be compulsory if the children want to play outside. If they don’t wear one, they will need to stay on the deck or under the shaded areas. It is also a great idea to slop on some suntan lotion at the beginning of the day.

 Calendars
The art work for the calendars has been completed. They look really great with a selection of photos of the children’s time at school. You can have a look at them at the school office. You will have the opportunity to have a look at and order calendars, cards mouse pads and notebooks.
These are a great for Christmas presents.

Sign Language
Room 8 have been learning the alphabet in Sign Language with Heather Browne’s class. Some of them can spell their own name! We will all be performing it at the school assembly Friday 27 November. The children will bring a copy of the alphabet home to practise it with you.

Bring and Buy
The Bring and Buy is on this Friday at 12.00 pm. It is a fundraising event that happens twice a year to raise money for the Year 6 camp next year. The children can bring anything from home that you want to sell and other children will buy it. The children need to bring their money in a named plastic bag containing small coins. I think $4.00 or less is enough for them to spend. It is best the $4.00 is made up of small coins. Each child needs to have a named plastic bag to put their purchases in.
Children don’t have to take part but most children do like to buy something.
It would be great if parents could come and help. You could imagine what it would be to take 19 five year olds out shopping!!
This is also a good time to teach your children about money.

Hutt Library
Once again we will be walking to the Hutt Library. I will need two other adults to come with us. If you can help please let me know.
